Spectrophotometric Determination of Magnesium in Blood Serum Using Magon.

PRESENT METHODS for the determination of magnesium in biologic fluids and their inadequacies have been reviewed by Maclntyre and Wootton (1). In 1957, Mann and Yoe (2) introduced a color reagent for magnesium called Magon, 1-azo-2-hydroxy-3-(2,4-dimethylcarboxanilido )naphthalene-1’(2-hydroxybenzene), which they reported has a sensitivity 8 times greater than that of Titan yellow. Since then, Magon has been used for magnesium determinations in sea water, brine (3), and rocks (4). The extreme sensitivity of this azo dye encouraged us to investigate further the properties of Magon and its application to the determination of serum magnesium.
